Sustainable Malmsbury
Sustainable Malmsbury arose from a joint initiative between Malmsbury residents and Macedon Ranges Shire Council to mitigate and adapt to climate change. We are a grassroots community group made up of local volunteers focused on sustainability, community connectedness and resilience.
Our current community actions include:
Monthly Farmers’ Market Community Produce Swaps and Recycling Station
Malmsbury Neighbourhood Battery project planning
Promoting uptake of Electric Vehicles in the Macedon Ranges
Wash-against-waste at community events
Community up-skilling workshops e.g crafternoons, fermentation, bread, cheese, biochar and edible weeds

We’re looking for passionate volunteers for the Wash Against Waste effort at the 2024 Kyneton Agricultural Show. Come and have fun and be part of reducing single-use waste in our community. You will also get free entry to the Show!!
What an incredible Wash Against Waste effort at the Malmsbury Village Fayre! Thanks to the Fayre committee for hiring the Wash Against Waste trailer, the stallholders who all used the reusable dishes, and to our amazing Sustainable Malmsbury volunteers who collected and washed and dried all the dishes over and over and over!
In an exciting first, we will be using the Vehicle to Load feature on an Electric Vehicle to power the Wash Against Waste trailer at the Malmsbury Farmers Market
We’ve been hearing a lot lately about getting off gas. It’s expensive, it’s an indoor pollutant and as electricity from the grid gets cleaner (in terms of its carbon emissions, thanks to reduced production from coal and increased production from renewables like solar) gas isn’t the dream fuel it used to be.
Here are some resources to help you find out more about why and how to get off gas, and news of some events coming up later this month to help you work out a detailed plan of action.
This March MRSG Sustainable Homes Action Group is presenting the “Project Showcase”, an exhibition of projects Macedon Ranges householders have undertaken to make their homes more thermally comfortable, cheaper to run and more energy-efficient, and of work-from-home spaces that are reducing the need to commute.

The Malmsbury Village Fayre is back on 20th November 2022. We need your help to wash dishes to keep up to 6000L of rubbish out of landfill. The first 20 volunteers will receive a free pie from the Malmsbury Bakery!

With increasing COVID-19 cases in our region, Malmsbury has rekindled their Coronavirus Community Support Project
The 6th edition of home sustainability guide “Your Home” has recently been released. In addition to the softcover book and website familiar to its current fan-base, a limited edition hardback version of the book has been published.
Sustainable Malmsbury is excited to be hosting these new workshops on making soaps and natural cosmetics, pruning, grafting and budding fruit trees. Tickets are selling fast. Don’t miss out!
Over $3000 has been raised for the Malmsbury CFA and Kyneton Caring Community Foodbank by selling fabric masks sewn by Sustainable Malmsbury volunteers at the Malmsbury Bakery.
Malmsbury Primary School, with support from Sustainable Malmsbury volunteers and a grant from Macedon Ranges Shire Council, has reduced their annual electricity use from the grid by one third. Learn how you can do the same at your home or small business.
Hot on the heels of the Neighbourhood House’s solar installation, we’re set to resume work on draughtproofing and secondary glazing works planned earlier this year.
Thanks to grants from Bank Australia and Central Victoria Greenhouse Alliance/MASH and local leg-work from MRSG’s Sustainable Malmsbury action group the Malmsbury Fire Brigade will no longer have to worry about power outages during the bushfire season.

Presentation on Community Energy for us by Newstead Community leaders
Come and hear how Newstead was able to successfully bring about a community energy project to add stability to the Grid and lower electricity bills for participating households. A detailed presentation will be followed by a Q & A session , followed by discussion around how, where and when we could run such a project in communities around Macedon Ranges and take advantage of government and other grants to give energy independence and lower household energy bills.
